Buying merchandise or service online has become a huge part of the American economy. A few clicks on the computer can bring an item to your door, often at a much better price than in a traditional brick-and-mortar business. That works for many purchases but, buying a furnace online can come back to bite the consumer in more ways than one.
When A Deal Isn’t a Deal If you’re considering buying a furnace, stick with a local contractor for the purchase. If you don’t, that deal you got online can cost you far more money than you thought you were saving. Here are just a few of the expensive problems you can encounter:
Warranty: Internet businesses come and go. You may buy a furnace that conks out in six months, go to the site where it was purchased, and the business is no longer in existence. The installer will not warrant the product, so you’re out of luck.
Knockoffs: There are knock-off watches, shoes, phones, computers, and other items. Why not knock-off furnaces? Your furnace may have all the trappings of a famous brand and still be a fake. That’s why they can sell for less. A short time later, when it breaks down, you’ll understand why it was cheap.
Installation: Most reputable dealers will not install a furnace purchased from the internet. It can compromise their reputation and create problems for both them and the purchaser.
Sizing: Only a qualified contractor can determine the correct size furnace for your home. Buying a furnace online is a gamble for the consumer. It may be smaller or larger than needed. Either way, without proper sizing, it will create expensive problems for the homeowner later.
These are just a few of the costly problems encountered from buying a furnace online. Finding parts and efficiency problems are two others.
