If you are considering an upgrade to your heating and cooling systems, this year is a perfect time to do it. Not only will the improved energy efficiency reduce your monthly utility bills, but you can also save money by taking advantage of the Federal tax credits that were extended in 2011. The tax credits vary depending on the type of equipment you purchase, with higher efficiency systems like heat pumps typically having a higher value. Here’s what you can save: $300 on air source heat pumps $300 on central air conditioning $150 on a gas, propane, or oil hot water boiler $150 on a gas, propane, or oil furnace Not every new system is eligible for the tax credits. New equipment must meet certain energy efficiency requirements, so make sure you work with your contractor to find a model that is both the right size for your home and qualifies for a credit. The minimum energy ratings are Air source heat pumps – SEER rating of 15 or higher for split systems, or 14 or higher for package systems Central air conditioning – SEER rating of 16 or higher for split systems, or 14 or higher for package systems Hot water boiler – AFUE rating of 95 percent or higher Furnace – AFUE rating of 95 percent or higher Remember: The tax credits are only good for equipment that is purchased and installed before the end of 2011. Think about upgrading your air conditioning system before the summer heat hits. It is also recommended that if you upgrade one heating or cooling system, you should also upgrade the other. A new air conditioner will not operate at peak efficiency if you have an older furnace, so talk to your contractor about the monthly savings you will get from upgrading both systems. With the hot summers and cold winters, we have in New Jersey, it pays to have higher efficiency systems.
