If you’re leaving for a vacation, consider these tips to cut energy costs while you’re gone. Not only will you have lower utility bills, but your home may be less vulnerable to problems that can occur during your absence.

  • Turn off your water heater if you’ll be gone for three days or more. A water heater can take as much as 10 percent of your total expenditures for energy.
  • Set the thermostat up for the air conditioning or shut it off altogether if you don’t have anything in your home that heat can damage. Check the filter for the A/C blower and change or clean it to cut energy costs.
  • Remove the food that will spoil during your absence from the refrigerator. While a warmer house makes the freezer and refrigerator run more, you can cut some of the running time by filling them with water bottles or putting flour, sugar, or grains inside them. A full freezer and refrigerator cut energy costs for this appliance.
  • Use CFL or LED lights on timers set randomly inside your home. Be sure that your exterior lights work. You can also install motion lights outdoors to discourage would-be intruders. Putting a radio on a timer mimics typical noise found in occupied homes.
  • Unplug the appliances that don’t need to run while you’re away, especially if they’re instant on like televisions.
  • Lower or unplug the heater if you have any waterbeds in your home.
  • Tend to the swimming pool before you go by putting the pump on a timer, so it doesn’t run constantly while you’re away. If you use a heater, consider turning it off and using solar blankets or covers to maintain water temperature during your absence. Covering the pool also reduces evaporation.
Having your air conditioner serviced before leaving on vacation not only cuts energy costs but also gives you peace of mind while you’re away.
