If you have plans to get a new A/C in the foreseeable future, doing so sooner rather than later will provide you with the many benefits that new cooling systems provide. The technology inside this equipment has advanced to deliver more comfort and better efficiency.
Consider these benefits of replacing your current system:
- Increased efficiency. The minimum SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) stands at 13, which is a significant improvement over the previous minimum, which was 10. A 13 SEER system uses 30 percent less electricity than its SEER 10 predecessor.
- Safer refrigerant. R-22 has been replaced largely by R-410A, a much safer refrigerant than R-22, which contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer. R-410A costs far less and contains no chlorine. The federal EPA is phasing out the availability of R-22, which is driving its cost up substantially. If your air conditioning system uses R-22 and the warranty has expired, it may not be worth refilling it because of its escalating cost.
- More comfort. If you select a new A/C that has a variable-speed blower, you’ll experience a quieter home with more even air delivery, lower energy costs, reduced humidity, and fewer airborne particulates. This type of blower runs at different speeds, depending on your home’s cooling needs. A dual-speed compressor is another feature to consider. Like the variable-speed blower, the compressor runs at top speed only when extra cooling is needed, saving electricity and reducing noise levels outdoors.
- Warranty. As long as you comply with the terms of the warranty for the new equipment, you won’t have to worry about shouldering the costs of repair or parts replacement for your new system for years to come.
- Tax credits. If you install a qualifying air conditioner or heat pump in 2013, you can receive a 10 percent federal tax credit, with a cap of $300. Installing a qualifying geothermal or solar system will leverage a generous tax credit of 30 percent with no cap, which is active through the end of 2016.
