A properly performing heat pump will ensure that you can stay warm throughout the upcoming winter. There are things you can do yourself that will help you get the most out of your heating system and some things that are better left to a professional HVAC contractor. But together, these steps can help you save up to 15 to 25 percent on your heating expenses.

One easy step you should do is replace the filters. Follow the manufacturer’s suggestions on how regularly they should be changed, usually once a month or so. This will help avoid a build-up of debris preventing air from being able to pass through. You should also clean the outdoor unit occasionally. You can simply spray it down with the water hose to knock the dirt off of the fins. Also sweep away any leaves, grass clippings, or other debris so that it doesn’t hinder the unit’s performance.

The most important thing you can do though is to hire an HVAC contractor to inspect your heat pump each year.
