You may harbor suspicions that your HVAC system is on its last legs, but how can you know for sure?
Telltale signs of trouble include:
Bangs, thuds, or clanking noises coming from your HVAC system. Loud, abrupt noises are often a sign of trouble, possibly with the indoor coil of your cooling system.
An excessive amount of dust in your home. Every home gets dusty, but excessive dust could be a sign that your air ducts need to be properly sealed. A
n ongoing battle to control humidity in your home, especially if it’s too humid in the summer and too dry in the winter. Several issues could trigger humidity problems, including leaky ductwork.
A room or rooms that are much colder or warmer than the rest of your home. Ductwork problems or poor insulation could be the root cause.
You can’t figure out why your utility bills are increasing (unless there have been rate hikes) and/or your HVAC system requires frequent repairs.
Your aging system has become less efficient, and a professional can figure out why.
Your air-conditioning unit or heat pump is more than 10 years old, and/or your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
New Energy Star units are highly efficient and can save you money on your utility bills.
