Everybody knows that humidity can make summer temperatures feel a lot higher than they are, and New Jersey residents know that soaking in a sauna in the middle of the day feeling that comes with the season. However, humidity doesn’t have to be a problem in your home, and getting it under control can make you a lot more comfortable. Use these tips to deal with home humidity and avoid the weather – at least when you’re inside.
1. Purchase a Hygrometer
Purchase a hygrometer to check indoor humidity levels. Hygrometers are inexpensive and easy-to-use tools that take readings of humidity levels inside your home. In the summer, you want the humidity level in your home to be between 35% and 50%.
2. Use a Dehumidifier
Use a dehumidifier to get rid of moist air in your home. Whole home dehumidifiers can be installed as part of your HVAC system, but standalone units can be used in single rooms. If you’re using a standalone dehumidifier, make sure you know the size of the room where you’re going to put it before you buy. One that’s undersized will be a waste of money.
3. Run Your Air Conditioner
Run your air conditioner during the day. Your air conditioner puts out dry cool air that can help balance the humidity in your home. Turning it on to push fresh air through your home when you have windows open can help get rid of humidity, even if you only leave the A/C on for 20 to 30 minutes. Chances are you’ll want to leave it on longer in the summer anyway.
4. Use Your Kitchen Exhaust Fan
Turn your kitchen exhaust fan on when you’re cooking. A kitchen exhaust fan can help get rid of a great deal of smoke and moist heat that can quickly build up in your home. If you have an open floor plan that moist heat will travel to other rooms as well.
