The proper kind of insulation can make a significant difference in the comfort level of your home as well as your heating and cooling costs. Insulation is rated according to the “R-value,” a measurement of how well that insulation resists heat transfer. Heat travels from areas that are warmer to less warm areas. What this means is that during cold weather, heat will leach from your home’s warmer living spaces into the unheated portions of your house, including attached garages, basements, crawl spaces, and attics. Insulation helps prevent the unwanted movement of heat from living spaces to unoccupied areas in your home. R-value measures the amount of thermal resistance provided by the insulation, and the higher the R-value, the better that the product insulates. The climate in your region does affect your insulation requirement, so another number to consider when determining the type of insulation, you need is your particular climate zone. Logically, homes in colder climate zones require insulation products with higher R-values. The United States is divided into eight climate zones, and you can find out your specific climate zone here. You also need to consider the age of your home in your insulation requirement assessment. Generally, older homes do not have as much insulation as newer homes, so it may be necessary to add to the amount of existing insulation you already have to achieve the R-value you need. The age and type of heating and cooling system you have will also factor into your calculations.
