To prevent this, add checking the ductwork and vents to your autumn to-do list. Here are seven common problems you may find: Furniture blocking supply or return registers: This common problem is the easiest to remedy, but not addressing the problem can lead to decreased home comfort. Poor duct connections: Where ducts meet supply and return grills are likely places for air to leak into unoccupied spaces of your home, like the attic, which wastes money. Leaks in return ducts: The air might not be making it back to the air handler if there are leaks in the return ducts. Leaks in supply ducts: If this occurs, heated air might be mixed with cold air in the garage, attic, or crawlspace, wasting both energy and money. Leaks at the filter slot: A filter in your air handler is important for trapping allergens, but if the slot isn’t sealed right, you could be losing air here. Disconnected duct insulation: Ductwork needs to be sealed because it’s made of such conductive material. If insulation has fallen out of place, it won’t do you any good. Kinks in ductwork: This restricts airflow and makes your air handler work harder than necessary to circulate air through your home, which results in higher operating costs.
